Icidence of Hepatitis C Virus Infection in Hemodialysis Patients by Second Generation Enzyme Immunoassay and Polymerase Chain Reaction

Abstract
Hemodialysis patients are known to be a high risk population for hepatitis C virus(HCV) infection. This study was performed to evaluate the incidence of hepatitis C virus infection in hemodialysis patients in Korea. The presence of anti-HCV
antibodies
was studied by a second generation enzyme immunoassay(Abbott Diagnostics, USA) and presence of HCV RNA was detected by polymerase chain reaction(PCR) in 39 patients. Five patients(12.8%) were positive for anti-HCV antibodies. The positive rate of
anti-HCV was not related to age, sex, dialysis duration and amount of transfusion, but it was highly related to elevated serum ALT values(P<0.001). the concordance rate of test results between anti-HCV and PCR in hemodialysis patients was
92.3%(36/39).
